What diameter your chandelier should be

The rule we use in the workshop: add the length and width of the room in metres, multiply by 10, and you have the chandelier's diameter in centimetres. For a room of 5 × 4 metres: 5 + 4 = 9, so a diameter of about 90 cm. It is a convention of proportion, not a law — it works for rooms with an ordinary ceiling, between 2.5 and 3 metres. Above that height, the silhouette of the piece matters more than its diameter.

What height to hang it at

• Above a table — the bottom edge of the chandelier sits 70-85 cm above the tabletop. Low enough to light the plates, high enough not to cut the line of sight between people at the table.
• In a circulation area — at least 210 cm from the floor to the lowest point of the piece. Below that, a chandelier becomes an obstacle.
• In a stairwell — the piece is read from several levels, so what matters is the overall height, not the diameter. See the guide for staircases.
• High ceiling — above 3.5 m, choose a piece with several tiers: it gains volume vertically without growing in diameter.

Three common mistakes

• Too small a piece. The most common one. A chandelier under-sized for the room looks lost and does not light it evenly. If you are torn between two diameters, take the larger.
• Measuring by the table, not the room. Above a table, the chandelier's diameter is taken at about half the width of the tabletop — not from the room rule.
• Ignoring the ceiling. A 2.4 m ceiling calls for a compact piece with a low profile. The same piece that looks commanding at 3.5 m becomes an obstacle at 2.4 m.
