For two generations, the Dumitriu family of architects has been drawing and building light fittings in Bucharest. The story begins in 1966 with a sketch — and continues today, in the F.D.Stil workshop, with the same pencils, the same brass and the same patience.

Six decades strung on the same brass wire — from the first sketch shown at the Biennale to the 2025 Union of Romanian Architects prize.
In 1966, at the Biennial of Decorative Art, the architect Florian Dumitriu exhibits his first custom-made light fittings. The jury picks his design to represent Romanian decorative arts.
In 1974 he becomes a member of the Union of Visual Artists and, together with a group of artists, makes the monumental chandeliers of the National Theatre in Bucharest.
In 1977, for the restoration of the Sinaia Casino, he starts Romania's first production of crystal chandelier components — work awarded the Union of Architects Prize 1977.
Between 1977 and 1989 he designs the light fittings of the Peleș, Pelișor, Foișor and Ghica palaces, of the Romanian embassies in Germany, Brazil, Greece and China, then of Cotroceni Palace and the House of the Republic. Throughout, he campaigns for the designer's profession to be recognised in Romania.
In 1991, Florian Dumitriu founds his own light-fitting factory in Bucharest. Five years later his son, the architect Dan Dumitriu, takes over — the second generation.
Between 2002 and 2006, the workshop designs and makes the chandeliers for the unfinished spaces of the Palace of the Parliament — among them the Senate Hall, one of the finest rooms in the building — and then the official halls of the Romanian Senate.
In 2006, solid brass lanterns designed and made in the workshop are installed on the façade of the D&D building — Decoration & Design, the landmark of Manhattan's design community.
Between 2007 and 2010, for the head office of the National Bank of Romania — a nineteenth-century building in the French Renaissance style — the workshop designs and makes dozens of monumental brass and crystal chandeliers and wall lights.
In 2012, after a long collaboration, Swarovski grants the workshop the status of recommended partner. One-off FD.Stil chandeliers light museums, listed monuments and residences across Europe.
From 2013, LED solutions bring the workshop into the offices of international companies: custom-made lighting carrying each firm's identity — from IBM and Orange to Electronic Arts.
In 2025, for the Constanța Casino — new chandeliers, designed and built from scratch for the building under restoration, not restored pieces — the workshop crafts more than 650 opal glass petals one by one. The work receives the Union of Romanian Architects Prize 2025.
35 years in the workshop, 2,788 delivered projects — and the same rule since day one: every piece is drawn, cast and finished under the same roof.
Design and production are never separated: every component — cast brass, glass, crystal, lampshades — is made in-house, after our own drawings.
Since 2001 every order has been tracked through our own system, from design phase to delivery — so nothing gets lost between the sketch and the lit piece.
Our pieces can be repaired decades later: we provide service and spare parts even for one-of-a-kind chandeliers.
The workshop's best argument is not a photograph — it is the piece in front of you.
